It is a beautiful, crisp, winter morning in Fairfax Virginia. The temperature feels a little above twenty degrees and it looks like we had a little dusting of precipitation while we slept. The kids are just getting up. John, my business partner, has a billiards table and the kids couldn’t resist a late-night challenge on a quality table.
John and his wife have the fragrance of sausage floating throughout the house. I am now texting all my friends to ascertain their whereabouts and their plans for today. We are catching the Metro into the Capital today to get tickets for the big event. Our family plans to meet with another friend and host, Whiteville High graduate and classmate, Terry Barnes.
After some food at Ben’s Chili Bowl, where President-Elect Obama stopped to eat last week, we will explore the mall area and strategize our activity for inauguration day. I can’t help but to wish that everyone back home could be here to witness this event. We were discussing, on our way up, how much of a privilege it is to be able to experience this in America, in our lifetime. The impact that this has had on our nation, the world, and our African American youth will be immeasurable.
I have a few regrets in my life. One of them was not attending the Olympics in Atlanta. So, there was absolutely no way I was going to miss having my family in the DC area for this event. I do wish that all the friends in Columbus County will share in this event in some way tomorrow. This is indeed history.
