African American Civil War Museum

This was our first stop on Monday, Martin Luther King Holiday. We felt this was a fitting tribute to the upcoming Inauguration. The memorial was developed by the African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation and Museum. It was transferred to the National Park Service on October 27, 2004, and is managed by National Mall and Memorial Parks. The museum, located two blocks west of the memorial in the historic U Street neighborhood, opened to the public in January 1999. Its mission is to allow visitors, researchers, and descendants of the United States Colored Troops to better understand this story of the struggle for freedom. - Benny Pittman
